Police gloves for many jobs

Posted on: June 16, 2011

Gloves are tricky things because they should fit snugly for the wearer to be able to move his fingers freely and get a good grip on the things that he has to handle. The disposable gloves that the medial fraternity uses do this job well, but it won't serve policemen because police gloves are work tools and defensive armor rolled into one.

Police gloves have been developed to help policemen in all their jobs. Most police gloves are puncture resistant and slash resistant to provide protection against sharp things like needles, syringes, knives, and razors. These are things that policemen routinely come against while conducting searches, or interacting with criminals. Some slash resistant gloves will have an additional layer of protection on the backside with a mesh, while others will have a reinforcing wrapping of leather between the index finger and thumb.

There are heat resistant police gloves, which are used when there is the risk of flame, high friction, or too much heat. Most of these withstand a temperature as high as 350 degrees Celsius so that there is limited risk of the gloves melting and burning the hands. Such gloves withstand friction also very well and so protect the hands if it gets subjected to heavy friction against heated tarmac or hot machine parts. The synthetic fiber known by its trademark name Kevlar is used in many models of fire resistant police gloves.

There are hard-knuckled disturbance control police gloves that are good for the punching job. Knuckles are reinforced in such gloves with hard polymer. The gloves are in most cases made of cowhide with padding of terry towel material or foam for comfort. Wrists will have either a Velcro closure or elastic. Some models of these police gloves will have an unpadded index finger to let the user pull the trigger without difficulty, while other models will have an extra layer of leather on the palm side for additional protection.

Among the latest in the police gloves series is the metal detector gloves. The metal detector, measuring 2.5" x 3" is a right fitting size for the human palm. The gizmo fits into a pair of leather police gloves without protruding and is designed to vibrate without noise when in contact with metal. The policeman wearing it can frisk a person or his luggage with the gloved hand and since it is noiseless the suspect will not realize it even if the searching policeman has been alerted to the presence of metal. This makes it easy for the policeman to conduct a more detailed search without the suspect being aware that something has been spotted.

Besides the various gloves designed for special uses, there are plain police gloves that policemen use at a crime scene to avoid destroying evidence. Gloves that do not have separate compartments for fingers, known as mittens, are also sometimes used in very cold weather because it gives more warmth than regular gloves. There are also convertible police gloves that can be changed fast from a mitten to a glove depending on the need.
